'Nosh for Students' is a recipe book written by Joy May, with easy to follow steps on how to cook affordable meals. I picked this up on the weekend, thinking that, at most it would provide a laugh for my parents. However, after flicking through and trying some of the recipes I've come to really like it for it's proper use.
The book requires no weighing scales, selecting all measurements via spoon size or in relation to the average mug. Handy, I thought, considering the worst part about cooking or baking is trying to measure out the right ingredients and trying to get it right otherwise things might go wrong. With this system its just not a worry.
Flicking through the book there are some handy table with vegetables and how long you should boil/roast them for. Along with some recipes for basic foods/sauces. Again, another really useful tool, I think the one thing I say the most when cooking is "Mum how long do I cook it for?" There is also a funny page entitled 'How long can I keep this before it kills me?', which made me chuckle. A page is kept aside for how to reheat things and what you should reheat and what you shouldn't. Ending the book with useful weekly meal planners and the ingredients that would be needed for that week. Teaching students how to plan for the week and not buying their food daily, therefore saving money.
The recipes themselves are simple and easy to follow, with a guide on every recipe stating how much it would cost, how easy it is to make (in a 5 star system), how many people it serves and vegetarian options. The food looks really yummy and there are some great ideas, for example a noodle dish that takes less time than a pot noodle to make and holds a lot more nutrition. There are sections with funny titles, for example, 'Things My Mum Would Cook' and 'Comfort Food'.
If you are a cooking novice, or are planning on moving away from home for the first time, I would totally recommend this book, all the prices within it are based on the prices of Sainsbury's and Tesco of the year it was published, and as far as I'm aware a version of the book is published every year with differing recipes.
